A Tribute to Thomas Barrus
From His Son
Thomas was my father and I remember lying on the lawn in front of the house after dark looking at the stars and he would tell us - 3 kids - the different constellations and how to find the North Star.
Later when I was older he and I went walking the electric fence in the Spring to check for sags and breaks before we let the cows out after Winter.
We were walking along, talking to each other and entered a small clearing covered with ferns in the middle of the woods. All of a sudden a fawn leapt up from the center and bounded toward the woods away from us. We stood there quietly watching it as it turned and looked at us for what seemed like a minute but must have been only a couple of seconds. I said in awe, "I'm not going hunting." He said. "I understand." We continued doing what we started out to do but were very quiet. We had shared a very special moment and both knew it.
